Brighter Future Foundation

Myanmar is one of the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) countries with a population of nearly 55 million people. The Human Development Index (HDI) in 2019 was 147.

Under five and maternal mortality rates in Myanmar are some of the highest in the world. Average life expectancy is 67 years. Whilst infectious diseases are still a health priority, the rates of non-communicable diseases are increasing. These conditions require regular, often lifelong, medical input.

Despite significant health need, current health expenditure (GDP) is relatively low for the size of the country (4.79% in 2018). Funding and medical care is fragmented throughout the country, with particular challenges in rural and border regions. The standards and provision of basic care and medical training for doctors and all other allied healthcare professionals requires significant improvement in Myanmar.
